My name is Ms. Elizabeth McCallum and I am the Life Skills teacher at Ballenger Creek Middle School (BCMS). This is my third year teaching at BCMS. Feel free to contact me via email elizabeth.mccallum@fcps.org or via phone 240-236-5768.
In sixth grade, the students learn a lot of neat things. The students will have a Drug Unit which includes prescription drugs, inhalants, tobacco, over the counter drugs, alcohol, and marijuana. The students will be learning about nutrition and will have at least 4 cooking labs. The students will construct a sewing project which will be a log cabin pillow project. There is a $5 lab fee for the sewing project and needs to be turned in on October .
In seventh grade, the students will be learning a lot of neat things as well. The students will have a family unit which includes information about family structure, nutritional needs of families, budget planning, and so much more. There will be a big family unit project at the end of the unit. The students will learn about living environment which deals with safety of the home, spacing of the home, and so much more. The students will also be learning about child development involving various age groups, developmental stages of children, babysitting techniques, children play, and so much more. The students will then expand on their knowledge from sixth grade during the nutrition (4-6 cooking labs) and the sewing unit ($10 lab fee).
In eighth grade, the students will be building on from their sixth grade Life Skills class. This is an elective for eighth graders. The students will continue with nutrition and sewing. Students will also learn valuable information during the Financial Literacy Unit such as credit card safety, budgeting, writing checks, and so much more. Students will also become American Red Cross Babysitter certified during the Child Development unit. Students will come up with a creative project and implement the project during the Service Learning unit. Sewing Lab fee is $10 for the final sewing project.
